Panasonic DMP BD85 - Panasonic Blu-ray Players
The BD 85, with it's PHL Reference Chroma Processor Plus is an example of Panasonic's commitment to getting the right hardware in to do the job. If you haven't got the best processor, then the rest of the operation is redundant. This allows a smoothness of image, as sometimes the crispness of images draws the eyes focus to the 'detail point' which can be a bit distracting when watching a movie.
This unit's clarity of image is it's main selling point, so you need to make sure you have a suitable TV screen or monitor to make sure that you get the most from the player. In the same vein, the sound is remarkable due to the Dolby True HD, so while they've gone for picture quality, the sound performance hasn't been neglected as that would be a pointless and disappointing exercise. Again, to take full advantage of the great sound you need to have a decent Hifi set up to get the most of a home theatre experience.
It does have an SD slot, and although you would expect it too, not all high grade players do so, and this is another example of Panasonic's attention to detail. Don't forget you don't have to spend a fortune on Blu-ray discs, you can watch DVDs on the player, and you will notice the difference.
Reviews that we have read have been very positive - the only criticism that we've heard is of the instruction manual, with particular reference to audio channel connection, but these days the internet has made manuals partially redundant anyway - help is always just a click away. Overall this is a great system, and probably one of the last straight players on the market before Panasonic move on to recorders.

Panasonic DMP BD85 - Review
Prior to buying this player I had a Denon dvd player: DVD-1910 which is capable of up 720p or 1080i outputs. DVDs looked very good on that player. Using a 32 inch monitor and feeding the audio through a separate hi-fi sytem, this Panasonic Blu-ray plays my DVDs with extreme clarity. The audio channels have an 'enhanced dialogue' capability which makes a great improvement. I used to have to use headphones on my Denon, but now can hear clearly without them. Playing Blu-ray discs is also excellent, very sharp and good saturation and again very clear audio. It takes some time to set the player up with the paramters that you wish to have and the instruction book is sparse on detail, in particular connecting the audio channels correctly. The buttons on the remote are rather close together and when watching a film in subdued ambient lighting, it is easy to press the wrong button when wishing to change something. Overall,when everything is correctly set up, this player far exceeds my expectations in both visual and audio fidelity. A. M. Pardoe (Worcestershire UK)
